A Simple Plan
On the eve of the nuclear summit, I have an idea for America: unilateral disarmament.
Nuclear weapons are useful in 2 ways. First, they can be used to kill millions or billions of people. Second, possessing them may deter another nation that possesses them from using them. Of course, they only work as a deterrent if the countries that possess them would use them in a counterattack against an aggressor.
There is a huge problem with this. If the government of nuclear country X launches a nuclear attack against us, that nation’s civilians are not to blame. Annihilating entire cities is neither morally acceptable not strategically important. It’s an unquestionably evil act, and cannot be justified. So if we found ourselves to be the victim of a nuclear aggressor, it would not be acceptable to repond in kind. Our counterattack against their civilians would be precisely as wicked an act as their strike against our civilians.
For this reason, we must never use them. If we’re not going to use them, there is no use in possessing them. Therefore, we should simply disarm.
