Tough Syllables

February 4, 2010
by

Here are some complicated monosyllabic words; the more phonemes the better.  The best ones seem to start with “s”.  Feel free to add to the list:

  • Sixths
  • Shifts
  • Spline
  • Clamped
  • Thrusts
  • Schmaltzed, squirreled and strengthed (the longest according to the OED, via Wikipedia.  A separate Wiki entry on long syllables.)
