Is It Luck Contest!

November 16, 2009
by

All you need to do is watch this video, then leave in the comments what you think I would say had I chosen to write about it. Trust me, this stuff writes itself.

The prize? Um. I don’t know. Grapes?

Update: We have a winner! Not only did Jen know that I speak the truth in Christian love, she also selected the exact chuihuahua I would have awarded. Well done, Jen. Enjoy your grapes! Being broke, I am shipping them at the media rate, so they might be raisins when you get them next July.

i didn’t watch the video, but I think you would have said: “For one beautiful night I knew what it was like to be a grandmother. Subjugated, yet honored.”

Okay, so I understand where the funnies are here; Christian guy doesn’t like homosexuality, HILARIOUS.
Not so much. Let me start out by saying I totally agree with homosexuallity, I think it’s natural, good and honest. My two best friends are engaged to each other in a lesbian relationship so I don’t want any responses saying that I’m just bashing homosexuality. Incidentally I’m also an atheist so I’m not being all “woo God!” either.
I feel that if a person wishes to express themselves then go ahead and let them. All we have to judge this scenario is what we are told by ‘Peter’. Now granted that his view is likely to be biased it’s natural to extrapolate and assume he made a big deal out of her homosexuality and maybe was vulgar or rude towards the co-worker but that’s not what we know.
We have to work on the evidence presented in front of us and from that evidence I think it’s completely ridiculous that this man is fired for a passing comment. Let us reverse the situation: A homosexual man or woman is sitting at work listening to a hetrosexual co-worker bang on about their upcoming marriage, the homosexual man or woman doesn’t really like hearing about hetro relationships because it’s not something they’re comfortable arouna dna so they ask their co-worker to stop. There is no way in hell that a company would fire someone for that and so I have to ask why they would fire a man for simply asking her to stop talking about something he felt very uncomfortable around.
People should not be penalised just because they are a majority, it’s morally wrong. Okay someone might say something about intolerance but as far as we know the guy isn’t being that intolerant, he doesn’t feel a homosexual relationship is right according to his religion and so after keeping his mouth shut for most of the day he says “look will you please stop talking about this because it’s against my religion and I dont’ really want to hear about it.”
Okay so maybe it’s a little intolerant but it’s not something that’s just a request, she doesn’t have to pay attention to him, in fact from what we hear she laughs in his face so that’s hardly a ‘tolerant’ response, if he is expected to be tolerant to her sexual beliefs she should be equally tolerant to his religious beliefs and it would be very easy for the two of them to avoid the subject completely if they wished, which he does.
To use another example: A recent divorcee goes to work and listens to a colleague talking about her upcoming marriage, it’s upsetting so she asks if said colleague would mind leaving the subject alone. It’s exactly the same, one person hears a topic they don’t like so they ask for a subject change.
For all his views disagree with mine this man does seem to be right in his view that the company in question is being utterly and completely ridiculous and wrong in firing Peter for merely asserting his own view in the workplace as his co-worker had been doing all day. (I feel I have to add the tag on the end here that when I say ‘view’ I mean controversial view and question why, just because she has the minority controversial issue surrounding her, that he be penalised for his comments) (oooh… thought of another example – my sister used to sit and poke me for hours and when I asked her to stop and poked her back she complained and I got told off for poking her – same scenario)
Of course this does rely on his view of events being correct – if he’s lying and he abused her verbally for it then he should be fired justifiedly for misconduct.

Oh also, that’s not a “what Barry would write” comment – that would be something sarcastic along the lines of “what’s wrong with someone talking about their fiance” ;P – but it’s my own reaction to the vid.

Thanks for your comments, Illusionists. You’re certainly right that there is not a huge amount of evidence to go on, and taken at his word, the guy probably has a legitimate gripe with his employer for canning him.

That said, I think his argument is terrible on its face. He was scandalized by a woman referring to her female fiance. I don’t see how the mere mention of something he dislikes merits asking her to modify her behavior.

I also don’t see how a polite request is grounds for his dismissal.

I suspect there is more to it than this fellow has disclosed. It’ll be interesting to see what comes of it.

I do think they did come down a little hard on Vadala for such a comment, though his justification is a pretty bad one. Why not just tell her that he’s uncomfortable talking about homosexuality and just change the topic? Just say it straight out. He said that he thinks the woman knew that he was uncomfortable talking about the matter, but you know what they say about assumptions.

Anyways, I probably would not have fired the guy. For one, it doesn’t seem fair. And two, it would probably cost the company money to train another guy to work in his place. Give him a warning and make him give an apology to the co-worker. However, the workplace does have the right to terminate him if he doesn’t follow their strict guidelines and they certainly have reason to do so; I just think it’s a little too harsh.

As for what Barry would say:

“Looks like he got a little…”

    *Puts on sunglasses*

    “burned.”

    YEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH!

    Yeah, that was terrible.

    I think Barry would say:

“This guy just won the world record for most uses of the word “homosexual” in a single sentance.”
