Hey Archdiocese of Washington, You Suck

November 12, 2009

Defenders of the Catholic Church frequently point to its humanitarian work as evidence of that organization’s overall benevolence. There’s a problem with this position:

Humanitarianism is a lower priority for the Church than discrimination.

That sounds so outrageous it couldn’t possibly be true, right?

From 2006 through 2008, Catholic Charities received over 8 million dollars from Washington, D.C. to administer certain humanitarian programs, including homeless shelters and adoptions. Now that D.C. is poised to pass some legislation recognizing same-sex partnerships, the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington isn’t feeling up to the job.

Fearful that they could be forced, among other things, to extend employee benefits to same-sex married couples, church officials said they would have no choice but to abandon their contracts with the city.
‘If the city requires this, we can’t do it,’ Susan Gibbs, spokeswoman for the archdiocese, said Wednesday. ‘The city is saying in order to provide social services, you need to be secular. For us, that’s really a problem.’

Waaaah! We’re a religion, so we shouldn’t have to play by the rules and treat everybody equally. Waaah! We’re taking our toys and going home!

Good riddance.

Fortunately for those of us interested in both humanitarianism and civil rights, the D.C. City Council isn’t about to be bullied by the whiny bigots in the diocese. Phil Mendelson nailed it when he said, “There were many people back in the 1950s and ’60s, during the civil rights era, that said separation of the races was ordained by God.”

Equally defiant was Council member Mary Cheh, who asked, “Are they really going to harm people because they have a philosophical disagreement with us on one issue?”

Bring it on home, council member David Catania: “If they find living under our laws so oppressive that they can no longer take city resources, the city will have to find an alternative partner to step in to fill the shoes.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Or could I? You be the judge.

Go fuck yourself, you piece of shit bigot motherfuckers.

You know I am a common defender of the Church…but this is one thing I can’t get behind. I am disgusted by the Archdiocese’s behavior. I don’t know how on one hand the Church can be fighting so hard for the national healthcare bill (heck they want to expand it to cover illegal immigrants) and yet they don’t want to provide health care to domestic partners. It is disgusting.
