Why Can’t It Be Tom Waits?

When you're worth 2.5 billion dollars, you can afford to look like an asshole.Guy Laliberte, the founder of Cirque du Soliel will be on the next Russian mission to the International Space Station. He’ll be on the Soyuz rocket that takes off September 30 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.  On October 9, he will perform something or other.

Al Gore, U2, Shakira, and Peter Gabriel will be involved.

There’s a good argument to be made that private trips to the ISS are self-indulgent wastes of valuable time and space that could otherwise be devoted to science.  Apparently, the cost of overcoming that argument is in the ballpark of $30 million.

Let’s hope it’s not more of the typical Cirque du Soliel creepiness.
