Raping Virgins Biblically

Homophobic fundies would have you believe that marriage has always been between one man and one woman. When reminded of Lamech, Abraham, Jacob, David, and other biblical heroes involved in nonconventional marital arrangements, they will respond that ideal marriage has always been between one man and one woman.

My question is: who gives a shit what the Bible says about marriage? Let me rephrase: how dare anyone give a shit about what the Bible says about marriage? After all, this ancient book of moral wisdom says that if you rape a virgin, you get to marry her. As long as you pay her father for his troubles.

To be fair to the holy word of the living God, it doesn’t say that all rape is ok, just that rape can be ok. Hallelujah!

Questions for quiet reflection:

– How many times does a book have to say that a rapist can buy his victim before its morality is properly deemed suspect?

– The Bible pits God against a foe named Satan. God endorses the purchase of rape victims by their rapists. Satan does not. If push came to shove, who would you side with and why?

– Name another book that supports the notion that raped virgins are chattels.

– The next time someone asserts that the Bible is the perfect guide to morality, what will you say?

Recently used this Deuteronomy tidbit to dispel the validity of this fucker’s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geert_Wilders) ranting and raving against Islam.

    Thanks.
