it’s no fun.

The Yankees are under .500 on the year. That’s not the part that’s no fun.

The part that’s no fun is that there’s a chance as I write this that we’ll take 2 out of 3 against the first-place Toronto Blue Jays, but I don’t get to enjoy it as the fan of the surging underdog.

There is a culture in NY these days that the Yankees are expected to win. We don’t root for them. Rather, we check to make sure they’re doing what they’re being paid to do. After over 30 years, the Steinbrenner mentality has pervaded even the fans. Last year’s failure to make the playoffs hasn’t cooled that off, either. So even though we’re 4.5 games back, the assumption is, in a few months, we’ll be in first place, where we belong. We’re not underdogs, we’re favorites who are running a bit late. We’re supposed to take 2 of 3 from the Blue Jays. Hell, why didn’t we sweep them?

I think this mentality comes directly from upper mangement (via the YES network’s drooling coverage… “The most storied franchise in baseball history…” “The most successful team in all of professional sports…” Shut up already), and I find it invasive and corrosive. I think it actually has a lot to do with the Yankees’ lack of success of late.

And now is the part where all my Red Sox fan friends get to say, “Cry me a river.” Go ahead, let me have it.

My internal monolog is clouded by phrases like,

    – take the high ground
    – kick him while he’s down
    – I’ve been through it, I should empathize
    – empathy is for losers
    – depart from the high ground for just long enough to kick him while
    he’s down.

Then, i realized that Alek is soliciting abuse. Nifty wrinkle – is it a trap? Will any response I make lead to a “yeah, well Jeter’s got enough rings to propose to a man in every state where it’s legal from him to do so?

Is it like Dark Helmet luring the Princes from Yogurt’s cave only to say “Foooled you?”

I abstain out of confusion and fear.

So now you see, Barry, that Evil will always triumph, because Good is dumb.

Second place is first loser. Ask Met fans.

Let me also be the first to say that the 2009 Phillies stink.

At least they’ve got a couple young guys. Its more enjoyable to watch a guy like hughes get lit up and think “man, if he could just put it all together…” than to watch kevin brown get lit up and think “i hate this fucking team”
