Teddy Roosevelt went around shooting lions and bears and 3rd world countries, and they invented that cuddly little guy and named it ‘teddy’. it was as bully a marketing strategy back then as it is today.
It’s true that he was an avid hunter. The walrus head mounted behind the bar allegedly belonged to a walrus that Roosevelt killed. However, the stuffed artificial bear commonly given to young children was named “Teddy” in honor of his humane decision not to kill a bear.
Apparently, Roosevelt was 3 unsuccessful days into a bear-hunting trip. One of the guides found an old bear and tied it to a tree, then brought Roosevelt to kill it. The President refused, it became news, and the teddy bear was named.
